Announcement
CWI has announced the recipients of the 2026 Van Wijngaarden Awards: Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb of the University of Cambridge and Mor Harchol-Balter of Carnegie Mellon University. The awards recognise scientists whose work has made significant contributions to mathematics and computer science.
Schönlieb is Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cambridge and is known for her research in mathematical imaging and inverse problems. Her work combines partial differential equations, optimisation and machine learning to develop reliable methods for image reconstruction, with applications ranging from medical imaging and molecular biology to materials science and art conservation.
Harchol-Balter holds the Bruce J. Nelson Endowed Chair of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research uses applied mathematics, probability and queueing theory to improve the performance of computing systems, with particular emphasis on reducing response times, computing-resource use and energy consumption.
The Van Wijngaarden Awards are presented every five years by CWI and are named after former CWI director Adriaan van Wijngaarden, one of the pioneers of computer science in the Netherlands. The 2026 awards will be presented on 20 November in Amsterdam during the Van Wijngaarden Soirée, which this year will focus on Europe’s AI potential and the role of fundamental research in shaping the future of AI. Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta will give the opening keynote.
